Young adult is literature for people who aren’t adults yet. Children’s literature is easy to read books and teaches many skills to kids. It helps kids be organized, observe, classify, compare, hypothesize, criticize, and summarize. For example the book hide and snake by Keith Baker, it encourages readers to search through illustrations to find the snake. It’s developing their observing skills.
Young adult literature helps readers find themselves and explore many things in life. It brings them comfort and makes them not feel alone. Young adult lit has common themes like friendship, relationships , family ,and identity . In brown girl dreaming family, jacqueline is finding herself and said “Maybe, I am thinking, there is something hidden like this, in all of us. A small gift from the universe waiting to be discovered.” She also finds her family important and talks about them a lot in the book. "This book is for my family—past, present and future. With love.” This was found in the beginning of the book and you can see she loves her family. Brown girl dreaming shows readers that you can make your dream come true and find who you are. Young adult is very important and young readers will benefit a lot from it . The graveyard book is also another great example of finding yourself and wanting things. “Bod said, 'I want to see life. I want to hold it in my hands. I want to leave a footprint on the sand of a desert island. I want to play football with people. I want,' he said, and then he paused and he thought. 'I want everything.” This book also talks about death and can give readers a different point of view it. Young adult also teaches about history. The book thief is about the Holocaust and it would help readers understand what Jewish people went through. Brown girl dreaming took place after the civil war and how they faced racism. Children and young adult lot help readers learn about life and grow.
“We teach only the greatest literature, and that automatically eliminates children’s and young adult lit from consideration. We won’t demean our students." I found your statement very untrue. Children's and young adult lit is very much equal to any other literature. They can learn many things from children and young adult lit. For an example, the book thief which is a book about the Holocaust. Readers can understand more and see the Jewish people's perspective. The book shows love and hate and how during a tragic time it showed they dealt with things and important to be calm. It taught that we shouldn’t take things for granted and understand what other people went through. It would also get readers interested in writing . Book thief shows how powerful words can be .Words helped her get through that tragic and horrific time. Assuming children and young adult isn’t great and disarming it, is not doing your students a favor . It would help the grow and understand life more. It’s key to help them develop and be better and get more interested in reading. If you want what’s best for your students then you won’t eliminate it .
