The Class Canon and Cancel Culture

In the article, “Do Works by Men Implicated in the Me Too Movement Belong in the Classroom” by Emma Goldberg I think it's a hard thing to talk about." Canceling a course because its materials are controversial or seen as morally problematic, the senate said, “would undermine both the value of free inquiry and the associated rights of faculty to engage in such inquiry by choosing their course content.” When I read that I was shocked and it made me mad. How can you teach kids content by horrible people? In a way, you're supporting them and it's wrong." Ms. Lyon was unmoved. “When you teach works like Woody Allen’s you’re normalizing and romanticizing the culture of abuse he was part of". I agree with her and it's weird when people try to say they like his work but not him. That's his work and you should not like either of them. In the article, they were teachers that would not want to teach books of people who were accused of sexual assault and it's understandable. "But she decided not to tell her class about the accusations against Mr. Alexie. “They thought it was the coolest thing in the world to have that role model; why take that away from them?” I get where she is coming from, but I think that's not fair towards her students.

After watching the cancel culture video I do agree with Ayishat Akanbi. Cancel culture is toxic and people can change. I know some people make mistakes and apologize. I do think some good does come out of canceling people. Like people that do problematic things and apologize but do it again. Then they get canceled for real and that is what they get for not learning from their mistake and not being sincere.

The difference between windows and mirrors is that windows are from another perspective. Mirrors are a reflection of how you see yourself. We need both because it helps us get a better understanding and shows creativity. I would include wonder, smile, and little women.
